It is also found in some central European countries e.g. in Slovenia where it was formerly also common as a Gottscheerish (i.e. Gottschee German) surname originating from the Kočevsko region in Lower Carniola (see Kocevar ). North German: metonymic occupational name from Middle Low German kovel ‘hood cowl’ for a maker of head gear of that type.
