English and Scottish (of Norman orign): from Old French curt peil ‘short hair’ with post-medieval excrescent or genitival -s. See also Copple Scottish: possibly a nickname from cupples one of the pairs of sloping rafters forming two sides of a triangle which support the roof of a building. Irish: possibly a variant of Caplice apparently from an unidentified English surname. It is found mainly in Tipperary and northern Cork.
