English and Irish: perhaps, as MacLysaght suggests, a shortened
form of the Welsh patronymic ap Richard,
assimilated to the name of one of the patron saints of Ireland. In
England the name is found chiefly in the Midlands. It has been
recorded in Ireland (chiefly Ulster) since the 17th century.
