The place-name probably means ‘farmstead associated with a man called Scyt(t)el’ from an Old English personal name *Scyt(t)el + the connective particle -ing- + tūn ‘farmstead estate’.

Perhaps occasionally from Shillington (Beds), which is recorded as Scytlingedune in 1060 and Shutlyngdon in the 13th century. The place-name means ‘the hill of the people of a man called Scyt(t)el’ from an Old English personal name *Scyt(t)el + the group-name suffix -ingas (genitive -inga-) + dūn ‘hill’.
