Extra Keying Helps

Common Keying Errors Found by Reviewers

- Cleveland City should only be keyed as Cleveland.

- Ohio City would be keyed as Ohio City as that is the name of the city.

-If there is a middle name or initial, please key it with the GIVEN NAME.

-If there are ditto marks, or the word 'same', please only type the name once.
-Be careful of the double "s".

-And watch out for the & Co - the name should be keyed, but the "& Co" should not be keyed and can look a lot like an "H".

Please be aware that the capital letter 'M' has a curlique on the bottom that looks like an 'e': (I'm putting example on Board) Myrick is being keyed as Meyrick; Mason is being keyed as Meason, etc.

Q: How do I enter "Bank of Wooster" as a name? Surname? Given name?

A: For this project we are not keying business names. Only the names of individuals should be entered.

Q: There are names that have the word 2nd behind them (usually identical names). Should 2nd be keyed as seen or just key one of the names?

A: 2nd is similar to Jr so the name would be keyed with 2nd in the suffix box.

Q: What is the correct procedure to enter something like "Brown and Smyth"? Is it two separate records or classified as a business?

A: It appears to be a business name, since a personal name would probably be John Brown and James Smith. Business names are not keyed.

Q: Which form is to be used when a page shows only companies?

A: If there is a record that is relevant to the collection but there isn't anything to be keyed it should be a cover page. - Anna -- Wiedwoman 23:04, 18 July 2012 (UTC) (Amended)

Q: There have been a few pages with "add Smith pg 23" in the margins among the names listed. Do we key these or ignore them?

Q: Found a page titled "{City} Personal Property". It looks to be a list of people in index form. Do we put these as Tax List and key?

A: Yes, it should be keyed.

Q: Do I enter the names on the page titled "Stockholder's Commercial National Banns"?

Here are two examples of what the lists look like. (You can also see similar examples on the main page.)
A: Yes I would key all individual names.

Q: Per instructions only key names once.... I have a situation where one name spans multiple pages. Should I key it twice(multiple times)?

A
My take on this is that since the different pages show different property that is owned that you would key the name once per page. Do let us know if this wrong.

Q: I can't believe this question has not been asked. Per instructions, "If more than one name appears on a line (such as Williams, Henry & George) key each person as a separate record". I wasn't able to find an answer. What about something like Taylor E & John Fredericks. This is obviously two persons on one line but is it two persons with surname Taylor or is Fredericks a second surname. I've seen keyers handle this differently. What should a reviewer do?

A: Taylor E & John Fredericks would be two names listed separately. One record for E Taylor. One record for John Fredericks.
