About Flensburg, Germany, Birth Index Cards, 1874-1902

About this collection

This collection contains index cards to birth records from Flensburg covering the years 1874 up to and including 1902. Flensburg is an independent city situated at the tip of the Flensburg Fjord, near the Danish border, in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. It is known as the home of Germany's strict Motor Vehicle "license point" database, and for its historical significance as a rum producer. Historically, culturally, linguistically and genealogically, the region surrounding Flensburg has been heavily influenced by its common German-Danish history. In the Low German language and in Danish the city is known as Flensborg.

Beginning on October 1, 1874, local registry offices were made responsible for creating birth, marriage and death records in the former Prussian provinces, which included Flensburg in Schleswig-Holstein. Index cards were later created to serve as reference aids to the records in the registry offices. They are organized by birth year, then alphabetically by the first letter of the last name.

What you can find in the records

The birth index cards are preprinted forms that were filled in by typewriter. Generally the following details may be found:

  • Last Name
  • Child's Given Names and Birth Date
  • Reference to the number and year-range in the civil birth registry
  • Parents' Denomination
  • Parent's or Mother's Nationality
  • Father's Given Names
  • Mother's Given Names and Maiden Name
