About Suffolk and the Great Rebellion, 1640-1660

The English Civil War of the seventeenth century is also known as the Great Rebellion. This work examines Suffolk County's involvement in the War. Through its contents the county's response to the Civil War and the impact the War had on the county are shown. The first portion of the work is dedicated to the impact of the war upon the county administration. The second section illustrates some of the neighboring counties' relations with each other and with their commander through the documents of the Committee of Eastern Association. The third and fourth sections are aimed at portraying the life of a West Suffolk village and an East Suffolk town in order to show how politics are influenced by the daily lives of ordinary people. Although this database will likely not make mention of your ancestors specifically, it is a great historical work that would be very beneficial to researchers with ancestors who were living in Suffolk County during this time period. It could be a great tool to help you place your ancestors in historical context, as it may shed some light on what their lives may have been like and how the Civil War affected them.
