About Freilassing, Germany, Births, Marriages, and Deaths, 1876-1985

About this collection

This collection contains civil registry records from Bavaria. It includes births covering the years 1876-1899, marriages from 1876 to 1932, and death records for the years 1876-1985.

Freilassing is a community in Berchtesgadener Land, Bavaria. It is situated immediately on the German border with Austria and is adjacent to the city of Salzburg. Until 1923, Freilassing was called "Salzburghofen" and this is the name given in many of the records. But even before that time, "Freilassing" may be found in lists of place names. The name change came due to growing railway traffic and the increasing importance of the Salzburghofen's train station which was located in the town's "Freilassing" neigborhood. The town was situated along a historically important trade route for salt. It belonged to the Kingdom of Bavaria from 1810 to 1918.

Beginning on January 1, 1876, birth, marriage and death records in the former German Empire were created by local registry offices. The collected records are arranged chronologically and usually bound together in the form of yearbooks. These are collectively referred to as "civil registers." While churches continued to keep traditional records, the state also mandated that the personal or marital status of the entire population be recorded.

What you can find in the records

Birth, marriage and death records were created using preprinted forms that were filled in by hand by the registrar. Depending on the individual form or on the formulations used by the registrar, you may find:

Marriage record pages have a front side and back side. Images of these are displayed one after the other. After 1921 some records may make reference to directories of marriage banns which are not included in this collection.

More about using this collection

Additional events from the lives of the people named in these records were sometimes recorded in the margins. These notes, sometimes referred to as "narration," can contain very useful information but they have generally not been indexed. As a result, information from the notes will not found via the search form. For example, if a child was not named at birth, no search result will be returned for its name even though a name may have been added later in the margin.
