About South Africa, Select Estates Death Notice Index, 1833-2008

The administration of a deceased estate occurs after death if that person owned property or created a will. The purpose of this process is to ensure that the financial affairs of the deceased are resolved properly, and that the financial interests of any heirs are protected. Part of this process requires that an official Death Notice for the deceased be filed with the court system.

This collection consists of a partial index to death notices which were received as part of the administration of deceased estates in South Africa for the years 1833 to 2008. The information typically available for each death notice includes the name, age or birth date, as well as date and place of death. Additional details are often available as well. These may include the date and place that the death notice was filed, the deceased's gender, residence, occupation, marital status, date and place of marriage, the names of family members, information on any property owned, or other personal details.

Note: This database is not a complete index of all death notices filed in South Africa.
