About this collection

This collection contains an index of names found in parish registers from numerous Protestant communities that are today part of the German state of Saxony-Anhalt. The oldest church records in this collection date from the 18th century. Many of the parish registers end in 1874. In addition to records traditionally kept by the Church in Prussian provinces, the State mandated on 1 October, 1874 that personal and vital statistics be recorded by local registry offices.

The collection includes, among others, the cities of Magdeburg, Halle (Saale), Stendal, Salzwedel, Aschersleben, Merseburg, Weißenfels, Wernigerode and Zeitz. Also included are many communities located within the historic boundaries of the Prussian Province of Saxony. The area covered was made up of a northern portion, comprising the historic Altmark region, and a southern portion which were divided by the Duchy of Anhalt in the middle. Not included in this collection are the communities of Bernburg, Zerbst and Dessau, which belonged to the Principalities of Anhalt and later the Duchy of Anhalt. The main areas of the Province of Saxony (1815-1944) lie today within the German state of Saxony-Anhalt.
