About Frankenberg, Germany, Birth and Death Index Cards, 1785-1875

About this collection

This collection contains birth and death index cards from Frankenberg, Saxony. Frankenberg is a city in the Mittelsachsen district of the German state of Saxony. The city is located in the Saxon Uplands along the Zschopau River about 10 miles northeast of Chemnitz. It takes its name from a 12th century Frankish settlement. The St. Aegidien church in the historic city center is a notable landmark. The birth index cards begin in 1774 and end in 1888. The death index cards begin in 1793 and end in 1892. However, the majority of the index cards are from the years 1785-1875. During the time period of this collection, Frankenberg belonged to the Kingdom of Saxony.

These birth and death index cards were originally created as finding aids to church records in Frankenberg and the communities of Dittersbach, Gunnersdorf, Hausdorf, Mühlbach and Neudörfchen. Most of the forms were filled in by hand and are arranged alphabetically according to last name. A symbol at the upper left of each card indicates the type of record. A star (*) indicates a birth record; a cross (+) indicates a death record. Dittersbach, Gunnersdorf, Hausdorf, Mühlbach and Neudörfchen each have only a single volume of index cards. Frankenberg is comprised of numerous volumes.
