Records of Applications under the Act of May 27, 1908, 1908–1927. Entry 434. NAID: 721447. Records of Bureau of Indian Affairs, Record Group 75. The National Archives at Ft. Worth, Texas.
Land distributed to Native Americans through government allotment (such as via the Dawes Commission) came with many restrictions governing its sale or lease. An act passed in May 1908 removed many of these restrictions and authorized the Secretary of the Interior to remove others. In particular, this allowed Indians to sell or lease, and incoming settlers to obtain, allotment lands.
This series contains records of actions taken on applications for removal of restrictions. Records include the applicant's name, enrollment number, tribe, degree of Indian blood, address, legal description of the land to be sold, date petition was filed, date approved, and date of sale.
