Historical Background

Joseph Smith founded the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New York in 1830. As membership grew, the main body of the church moved into Ohio, Missouri, and finally Illinois, where they established the city of Nauvoo and Joseph Smith was killed in 1844. In the face of growing persecution, church members began leaving Illinois in 1846 for unsettled lands in the American West.
