Historical Background

Following the murder of Joseph Smith in 1844, the church he founded in 1830 broke into several factions. The main body of the church began its move west in 1846. The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was established in 1860 in Illinois as a “reorganization” of Smith’s original church.
