About Gothenburg, Sweden, Passenger Lists, 1869-1951

Sweden saw approximately 1.3 million citizens leave the country between the mid-19th century and the early decades of the 20th century, with mass emigration peaking in the late 1800s. The majority of those emigrants left through Gothenburg, Sweden’s most important western port.

This makes passenger lists from ships leaving Gothenburg an invaluable source for tracing emigrants. The records in this collection include lists compiled during the great waves of Swedish migration in the 19th and 20th centuries, from 1869 to 1951.

About the Records:

The Gothenburg passenger lists are searchable by name, birth date, birthplace, departure date, and the name and destination of the ship. Images of the original records are also included, and these may indicate a residence or a final destination. Researchers may be able to extrapolate or uncover relationships among family members they can see are traveling together.
