Italian: patronymic from the personal name Zotto, which may derive in part from an old Germanic personal name and in part from a variant of Giotto or a pet form of Ambrogiotto, Angelotto, etc. Italian: possibly a nickname from an old Venetian word, zoto ‘lame’. Albanian: from zot, zoti ‘lord’, ‘master’. This was either a status for a landowner or a nickname for someone who frequently used this word as an oath.
