The Lancashire placename may derive from an earlier placename (from British vindo- ‘white’ + kaito- ‘wood’) + Old English lēah ‘wood woodland clearing’. The Yorkshire placename probably derive from an Old English personal name Wineca + Old English lēah. Americanized form of German Winkele.
