Wiborg Family History
Wiborg Name Meaning
Danish and Norwegian: habitational name from the Danish city of Viborg or especially in Norway from any of several farms named after the city. The placename is a derivative of Old Norse vé ‘(pagan) sacred place’ + berg ‘rock mountain’ (the latter element was altered into borg ‘castle’ in the Middle Ages). This surname is also found in Germany. Swedish: ornamental name composed of an altered form of the placename element vi (representing either Old Norse vithr ‘forest’ or vé ‘sacred place’) + the ornamental element borg ‘castle’. The surname may have been influenced by the name of a Danish city (see 1 above).
