The Westmorland placename may derive from Old English hwearf ‘embankment shore wharf’ + tūn. perhaps occasionally a habitational name from Wiverton in Nottinghamshire derived from the Old English personal name Wīgfrith + Old English tūn ‘farmstead estate’.
