French Canadian: variant of French Suret, an occupational name from a diminutive of sûr ‘shoemaker’. The spelling -ette is not a feminine form, but a spelling prompted by the continuing pronunciation of final -t in Canadian French surnames after it had become silent in ordinary French vocabulary words.
