Hungarian; Czech and Slovak (Šuba): from Hungarian suba Czech and Slovak šuba ‘fur; long sheepskin coat’ applied as a nickname or as a metonymic occupational name for a furrier. As a surname of Hungarian origin it is also found in Romania. Americanized form of Polish Szuba . Filipino: topographic name from Hiligaynon and Cebuano suba ‘river’ and perhaps also from a homonymous word which in Ilokano and Pangasinan means ‘to go upstream’.
