Irish (Cork and Waterford): shortened Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Sleimhne ‘son of Sleimhne’ a personal name based on a word meaning ‘smoothness sleekness polish’. It has been argued however that this is not a true Gaelic name but rather a patronymic adopted by the Fitzstephen family of County Cork.
