English and German: from a Germanic personal name composed of the elements ric ‘power(ful)’ + hari, heri ‘army’. The name was introduced into England by the Normans in the form Richier, but was largely absorbed by the much more common Richard. Americanized spelling of German Ritscher, a variant of Richard.German: nickname or status name from Sorbian rycer ‘knight’.
