Italian: habitational name from any of several places so named for instance Palo del Colle in Bari province or Portopalo in Syracuse province Sicily. Italian: possibly a nickname from palo ‘pole’ used to denote a tall and thin person. Slovak (Paľo): from a pet form of the personal name Pavol an equivalent of Paul .
