Japanese:: written 沖 ‘offing’. It is a very old surname which is a component of the name of the island of Okinawa as well as of the Oki Islands north of Shimane prefecture (though the latter is written phonetically 隠岐). (Ōki): written 大木 ‘large tree’. Surname of a samurai family of Hizen (now Nagasaki prefecture).
