Irish and Scottish: shortened form of McNaughton from Mac Neachtain. Scottish: from Naughton in Fife which is recorded as Hadnachten in the 12th century and Athnathan in the 13th century. The placename derives from Scottish Gaelic áth ‘ford’ + the personal name Nechtan.
