Czech and Slovak: from a short form of Miloslav, Bohumil or some other personal name formed with Old Slavic mil ‘grace’, ‘mercy’. Possibly an Americanized spelling of Hungarian Milotai or Milotay, a habitational name for someone from a village called Milota in Szatmár county in northeastern Hungary. The place name is of Slavic origin.
