German: variant of Mühlich (via the form Miehlich), an unflattering nickname from Middle High German müelich ‘troublesome’, ‘difficult to get on with’. Eastern German (of Slavic origin): from a pet form of a Polish compound name with the first element mily ‘nice’, ‘pleasant’, or possibly an Americanized spelling of the Polish name Milicz, which has the same origin. Serbian and Croatian (Milic): patronymic or metronymic from the personal names Mile, Milo (male), or Mila, Milica (female), derivatives of the Old Slavic adjective mil ‘gentle’, ‘dear’.
