Altered form of Finnish Leppä or Leppänen (see Leppanen ) and possibly also of some other name containing the word leppä ‘alder tree’. The surname Leppo is also found in Finland but it is very rare there. During the name-changing campaigns of the early 20th century it was adopted to replace the Swedish cognate Ahlgren .
