Eastern German: habitational name of Slavic origin, from a town so named in Saxony, from Slavic laz ‘uncultivated land’, ‘clearing’. North German (Hamburg): possibly a metonymic occupational name for a fisherman, from Middle Low German las ‘salmon’ (see Lax 1).
