Americanized and Germanized form of Jewish (from Eastern Europe) Kreynits: metronymic from the Yiddish female personal name Kreyne (hypocoristic of Yiddish kroyn ‘crown’) + the East Slavic suffix -its. Germanized form of Slovenian Kranjec Kranjc and Krajnc and possibly also of Croatian Kranjec: habitational name for someone from the former Habsburg Duchy of Carniola (Slovenian Kranjska) in present-day Slovenia (see Krantz ).
