Turkish (Koçan) and Bosniak (Kočan): nickname from Turkish koçan Bosnian kočan ‘stump or hard stalk of cabbage’ also ‘(bare) corncob’. Slovenian (Kočan): habitational name for someone from the villages or hamlets called Kočna Kočno or Kot all named with kot ‘corner’ (compare Kotar ). It may also be a status name for someone who lived in a cottage from koča ‘cottage’.
