Polish: patronymic from a reduced form of Polish Jakub (see Jacob). Hungarian: from a Turkish loanword kobak ‘head’, ‘forehead’ (from Cumanian and Pechenegg quabaq or Ottoman Turkish kabak ‘pumpkin’), hence a nickname for an unsophisticated person or someone with a bald or big head.
