Chinese : from the place name Jingzhou, denoting an area which later became the state of Chu during the Spring and Autumn period (722–481 bc). Chinese : from a character that means ‘(water) well’. This originated with the Earl of Jing, a senior adviser in the state of Yu during the Zhou dynasty (1122–221 bc). Chinese : from the name of the Marquis Jing of the state of Wei, who lived during the Warring States period (403–221bc).
