Japanese: written 市川 ‘marketplace river’ also 一川 ‘one river’. This is a common placename throughout Japan. One branch of the Taira clan lived in a village called Ichikawa-gō in Kai (now Yamanashi Prefecture) and took that name. Found mostly in eastern Japan.
