English (southern):: occupational name from Middle English hos(i)er hus(i)er ‘maker or seller of stockings or leggings’ a derivative of Middle English hose ‘hose’ (Old English hosa reinforced by Old French hose huese). Hose was the regular term for garments worn on the legs until the 18th century. Compare Hose and Hussey . alternatively perhaps a variant of (h)ussher husser ‘usher’ (see Usher ) a ceremonial office performed by high-ranking men in service to a greater lord.
