Japanese: written 福井 ‘blessed well’. It is found mostly in western Japan and the Ryūkyū Islands. There are several unrelated families bearing this name the noble ones descending from Izumo no Ōmi an ancient chief of present-day Shimane prefecture. Some others descend from the southern Fujiwara and another group from a branch of the Minamoto .
