Norwegian: habitational name from a farmstead so named from forberg ‘protruding ledge’. German: habitational name from either of two places called Vorberg or from Vorberg-Heide in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. According to one theory the original form was Vorwerk denoting the operating farm (barns and stables) in front (‘vor’) of a manor house in a parklike setting werk ‘plant factory’.
