Irish: translation of Gaelic fionn ‘fair’, which Woulfe describes as ‘a descriptive epithet that supplanted the real surname’, or a reduced Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac F(h)inn, a variant of Mag Fhinn (see McGinn).
