Scottish: habitational name from Draffan in Lanarkshire. Probably an altered spelling of German Draffehn, an ethnic name for a Slavic speaker from Lüneburg Heath, from Polabic (a West Slavic language) Dråwën. This was the westernmost region where a Slavic language was spoken. In some cases the name was habitational, from a place called Drawehn, near Köslin in Pomerania.
