perhaps from Dolch ‘dagger’, ‘knife’ (of uncertain origin); presumably a metonymic occupational name for a maker of such weapons or perhaps a nickname for someone who habitually carried one. However, the vocabulary word was not recorded before 1512, and the surname may alternatively be a variant of Dolge, a topographic name meaning ‘long’, from Old Slavic dolgy. variant of Dolen.
