Irish (Westmeath and Offaly): shortened Anglicized form of Gaelic Mac Fhláimhín ‘son of Flaithimhín’ a personal name from a diminutive of flaith ‘prince ruler’ (see Lavin ). Alternatively a shortened Anglicized form of Ó Claimhín ‘descendant of Claimhín’ a diminutive of clamh ‘mangy creature leper’. This name has been Anglicized as Swords due to folk-etymological association with claidheamh ‘sword’.
