Manx: from a shortened form of either Gaelic Mac Luathóg ‘son of Luathóg’ (a diminutive of Gaelic luath Manx leah ‘swift’) or Gaelic Mac Laoghóg ‘son of Laoghóg’ (a diminutive of Gaelic laogh Manx lheiy ‘calf’). One branch of the family had its seat at Ballaclague (Arbory). The name is generally pronounced /kleg/ and in some cases has been assimilated to the English surname Clegg .
