Americanized form of French Chevret: diminutive of chèvre ‘goat’ used as a nickname for a swift and agile individual or as a metonymic occupational name for a goatherd. Altered ending reflects the Canadian and American French practice of sounding the final -t. In some cases possibly also French: from the feminine form of Chevret (see 1 above).
