Compare Chaussee from Old French chausse ‘footwear’ or ‘leggings’ (from Late Latin calcia for classical Latin calceus ‘sandal shoe’) hence a metonymic occupational name for a maker of shoes or leggings or a nickname for a wearer of distinctive ones.
