The surname is now found chiefly in Yorkshire and Westmorland. Greek: Hellenized form of the Italian surname Bella or alternatively a nickname derived from South Slavic bel ‘white’. Galician: probably from the adjective belo bela ‘beautiful lovely’ possibly with topographic reference.
