my grandma and granddad weren't married until after they'd completed their family (grandma married my mums father but quickly took up with a new man who fathered her other children) I'm just in the process of gathering birth certificates for their children (my aunties and uncles) One of those children died when she was 4 weeks old. Her death certificate arrived earlier this week so I'm considering ordering her birth certificate just to have it on record.
Today I noticed that the baby's birth is showing up on freeBMD as being registered twice - once under my grandmas married name (Corbett) and once under the name of Chetwyn (Ernest Chetwyn was the baby's father but he wasn't married to my grandma at this time)
My question is - if babys dad couldn't attend to register the birth (so baby had to be registered in the mothers surname?) is it likely that the father attended at a later time, claimed the baby as his and had the name on the birth certificate altered/amended? And would this result in the baby showing up twice with different surnames? I'm 100% certain it's the same child.
Thanks for any input
