ABILENE,TX -As friends and family members mourn the loss of James Robert Miller, colleagues recalled his service to McMurry University and his talents as an artist.

''J. Miller could be counted on to provide lectures and demonstrations on painting techniques - delivered on television, in museums, or at any number of opportunities that arose in art clubs and similar gatherings,'' said McMurry President John Russell.

Miller, 77, died Monday in Midland TX.

Memorial services begin at 10 a.m. Saturday in Radford Auditorium on the McMurry campus. Ed Lang will officiate.

Miller, an Abilene High School graduate, earned a degree from McMurry in 1951. He joined the McMurry faculty in 1962, and he has been a member of the art faculty at the university. His paintings have received many awards and honors.

Russell said Miller leaves behind a ''superb reputation as a portrait and landscape painter.''

Miller illustrated 17 films for international television, as well as books. His murals decorate the walls of buildings in several states. Sixteen editions of his limited edition lithographs are now in circulation.

As an educator, Miller was for nine years director and co-owner of the nationally known Burnsville Painting Classes in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina.

Besides his artistic endeavors, Miller also entertained children as a member of the Shrine Klown Unit. When Miller was dressed as Zee Zee the Clown, he performed at Shrine circuses and other events.

Miller is survived by his wife, Billy Ruth Miller, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
