Grandparents of Jane Alice Edwards of Corwen

Hello All,

I've been having some difficulty for a long time in tracking the record for an ancestor of mine called Richard Humphreys, born somewhere in North Wales in the mid-1850s, helpfully identified on census' as "Cefn, Wales".

A strong match on AncestryDNA has lead me to a connection with a lady called Jane Alice Edwards, born 1876 in Corwen, Merionethshire to Richard Edwards and Jane Alice Jones.

I'm getting a lot of suggestions of matches to Edwards' and Jones' from the same area, but am having trouble pushing back beyond Richard and Jane.

I believe from the strength of the matches that either Jane's Edwards Grandparents or Jones Grandparents are also the Grandparents of my Richard, which would massively help narrow down which record is his.

If anyone has the time and is willing to please cast a fresh eye over it for me it would be most appreciated, as I feel my limited knowledge of North Welsh Placenames is hindering me somewhat.

Best wishes and thank you in advance for your time,

Dale

Where have you seen Richard H on the Census?

Regards
William Russell Jones.

The 1901 Cenus for Tipton, Staffordshire, England has Richard Humphreys, born c1853 in "Cefn, Wales".
His occupation is "Boatman Canal". This points straight to "Cefn" being "Cefn Mawr, Denbighshire, Wales" which is on the Shropshire Union Canal (although that branch is now known as the Llangollen Canal).
The rest of the family were all born, and baptised, all along the canal system of England (Middlewich, Wednesbury, Stoke, Saltley, Weedon and London). This could mean that Richard had no connections to Wales, he was born in Cefn Mawr simply because the boat he was on happened to be there at the time??
The 1911 Cenus for Birmingham, Warwickshire, England has Richard Humphreys, born c1859 in "Cefn, Wales". He is the Captain of the "Brentford", moored at Bordesley Street Wharf with his new wife Charlotte (born c1850 Brierley Hill). They had been married for 6 years. Registers show they married in Paddington Green, London, England
Unfortunately I can't see the family anywhere before that 1901 census!!! Some of the children do appear on later censuses though.
Several others are researching the family on Ancestry, but making a bit of a dog's dinner of it by choosing the wrong "Cefn"!

Hello,

Thanks for that, it's actually very helpful.

I suspected Cefn Mawr, but my knowledge of the geography isn't the best. I also know of the Llangollen Canal, and have a DNA Match on what I suspect is this line, with a person with ancestry in that exact area.

The registration district for there seems to be Corwen, and I have a certificate for someone born in Corwen in 1855, but it raises more questions than it answers.

This one is proving incredibly difficult because of the movement and the lack of consistency with the spellings. The ages are varying somewhat as well which also isn't helping...

The Registration District for Cefn Mawr is Wrexham not Corwen.

Looking at the map i'd say the same, but I have a registration district of Corwen with a place of birth as Glyn Ceiriog, neither being far from Llangollen or Cefn Mawr I don't think?

Yes, Llangollen and Glyn Ceiriog (across the mountain from Llangollen) were in the Corwen Registration District. The River Dee was the boundary between the Corwen and Wrexham (including Cefn Mawr) Registration Districts.
