Because James K. Turnbull, father of Elizabeth, had the middle initial "K", it makes me wonder if that middle name was actually Kirkwood, from James' mother's maiden name, and this carried down as Elizabeth's middle name.

As satch42179 had found, James K. Turnbull was married & was living in North Dumfries Tp., Waterloo Co., in 1861, per the census. Another lady, named Janet Turnbull, born very close in age to James K., married there in 1859. It makes me wonder if James K. and Janet were siblings and perhaps both their parents were Thomas Turnbull and Elizabeth Kirkwood. At least it's food for thought:

Name: Janet Turnbull
Birth Place: Canada
Residence: North Dumfries
Age: 25
Estimated birth year: abt 1834
Father Name: Thomas Turnbull
Mother Name: Elizabeth Kirkwood
Spouse Name: Alexander McSwain
Spouse's Age: 28
Spouse Birth Place: Scotland
Spouse residence: Ayr
Spouse Father Name: John
Spouse Mother Name: Nancy Gillies
Marriage Date: 1 Dec 1859
Marriage County: Waterloo
James Steedsman & Elizabeth (Turnbull) lived in Nebraska for a period in time and some of their children where born there. The family later moved up to Alberta, Canada. James & Elizabeth's family were on the 1906 & 1916 Census for Calgary East & were on the 1911 Census for Red Deer.

James' parents were George Steedsman b. Dec 29 1835 in Scotland, died Apr 25 1912 in a house of refuge in East Zorra, Oxford Co., ON, and Margaret Rankin King b. June 12 1829 in Beith, Ayr, Scotland; died Sep 6 1906 in Blandford, Oxford Co., parents being Robert King (1809-1881) and Margaret Craig (1818-1871). This information comes from a tree posted on Ancestry.

On the 1871 Ontario Census, James "Steedsman" was listed with his siblings & parents living in Blandford, Oxford North County-
George Steedsman 35 b. Scotland
Margaret Steedsman 32 b. Scotland
James Steedsman 7 b. Ontario
Robert Steedsman 5 b. Ontario
William Steedsman b. Ontario

On the 1880 Census, James "Steedsman" was listed with his parents, George and Margaret, and his siblings, living in Everett, Burt, Nebraska. George & Margaret had moved there after the birth of one of their children in Ontario in 1878.

George & Margaret "Steedsman" were on the 1901 Census for Blandford, Oxford North Co., Ontario & a daughter was shown as being born in 1884 in Ontario, so their time in Nebraska was short lived & the family was back in Oxford County by 1884. It would make perfect sense that James returned to Ontario, with his parents, then married Elizabeth Kirkwood Turnbull in Oxford Co. Ontario, on Feb 9 1887, before heading back to Nebraska. (At least 7 of the children of George & Margaret were listed as "Steedsman" on their marriage registers in Ontario).

James and Elizabeth "Steedsman" & 6 of their children (born in Nebraska between 1888 & 1897) were on the 1900 Census for Lyons village, Burt, Nebraska

Elizabeth's brother-in-law, Thomas Mcintosh, & her parents, James K. & Bella, also lived in Nebraska:

James K Turnbull M 77 b. Canada grandfather-in-law immigrated 1892 parents b. Scotland

On this census, James K. & Bella Turnbull were not listed with them:

I did not find James K. nor Bella Turnbull on the Iowa Gravestones site

I did not find them on the Cherokee City, Iowa, Oak Hill Cemetery index:

Nor did I find them on the site for deaths in Iowa 1850-1990; nor deaths for Colorado

I did not find them listed on the Colorado Tombstones site:

Nor did I find them on Find a Grave.

I'm positive it's the same person, regardless of how the surname has been spelled. Census records, in particular, tend to have errors in them.

Please write to me direct and I'd be happy to send you, or point you to, the documents that will logically show this. My address is

Just to clarify one thing, I made a mistake when I wrote about the 1900 US Census Coleridge & Belden villages, Cedar, Nebraska. It was Elizabeth's brother, not her brother-in-law, that was on this census, along with her parents & the Mcintosh children. I wrote down the name correctly but referenced the wrong person. Plus, I repeated some of the Mcintosh children's names when I listed that census. I haven't looked to see what happened to Margaret (Elizabeth's sister) & Thomas Mcintosh.
